As mentioned I recently did another secret cinema, “The Battle of Algiers”. It was set apart from the productions I’ve worked on for them by its political and very current subject matter. I must admit I was almost worried about the choice of film at first: can a film like this give the audience what they want from Secret Cinema?
Needless to say the show went over all expectations: the set was beautiful, the atmoshpere in the casbah was incredible: the little rooms and sets made you feel like you just walked into someones house…there was a beautiful mosque where you couldn’t drink alcohol and you had to take off your shoes before entering. And then it was the pass points where you had to show your ID: french or arab. If your were arab you’d have great difficulties getting to the french quarters and you’d be picked on by the french actors. In this way you could feel the film and its atmosphere on your body before even before knowing which film was shown. This definitely gave the film another dimention when they finally ushered you into the many cinemas on the site, and i think it also made the film more accessible to doubting audience members.
Another great production to work on with an amazing team of young, creative people. Big up to the costume team I’m a part of led by Martina Trottman!:)
